Resolve 15 Crash Course: Planar Tracking in Fusion

Today we are going to talk about tracking inside of BlackMagic's Fusion in the latest version of Resolve. It's become quite the beast of a program, to say the least.

So I want to take a moment to show you a bit about what I've learned about it so far.

 

To refresh: we've got our node map:

The inspector that gives a bunch of option to your nodes:

And we have our viewer and our libraries:

So the first shot we have is a confused guy in the forest.

The thing I want to try and do is to track one of those trees and place some neat text on it. To track this I'm going to use a planer track, the same kind found in Mocha if you've ever used it.

So grab the planer tracker from our tools bin,

and plop that down right in the middle of our MediaIn and MediaOut nodes.

One quick tip: the two dots at the bottom of the nodes indicate which viewer they appear in.

This can be a bit confusing because it is merely a visual thing, so don't let it mix you up thinking that the left is always the beginning shot! Make sure you know what is being viewed where!

Anyways back to our tracker. The first thing I do is go up to my inspector tab and under the Tracker drop-down, I'm going to select Hybrid Tracker/Area.

Once that's selected I basically draw the shape that I wish to track, right on the viewer. Since I want to track the tree, I'll make a nice little rectangle around the trunk. What this is doing is telling Fusion to look inside of that rectangle and track everything inside of it.

Another side note: I tend to start my tracking at the beginning of clips. I find that sometimes I get mixed results if I try to track from the middle of a clip, so be sure and start at the front of a clip for the best outcome.

Now with my tree selected, I go back to the inspector tab and click the far right button, which is the Track Rest of Shot button, (it looks like a play button with a line shooting out of it).

Once it's done you'll see that your shape has been colored in with lots of tracking dots. This is good! Now the real trick comes into play: How do we actually stick something onto all this tracking data?

This part is pretty cool. With all of the tracking done, a button at the bottom of the inspector is now available: Create Planer Transform.

That makes a new node that includes all of the tracking data in it. So how do we use it?

Let's make a text title node and a merge node. Now the easiest way to set this up is: MediaIn > Merge1. Text > Merge1. Merge1 > MediaOut.

 

Now to add our planer transform, shift click the node and drop it in between the text and Merge nodes. You'll see the tether turns into two colors, blue and green. Let it go and voila!

You've linked the text to the shot with tracking! How cool is that! And it wasn't that hard, was it?

Let's take it once step further and add a background to our text. I go to Generator in the effects bin

and choose background. Plop a rectangle mask on there, link it all to the Merge going into the tracker

and BAM. We've got a background for our text.
